If you get into video editing or gaming, the GPU is VERY important, but for photography, your money is better spent elsewhere. Had to get that off my chest, but great article! Very helpful! Oh, and I’d rather have two smaller monitors than one bigger monitor, esp. For Lightroom so split that monitor budget in half and buy two. @Tony Thanks for contributing Tony, great to have you part of the community here. I was very tempted to put RAM as a second priority to SSD in my list for the reasons you have stated here, although I wouldn’t really want to try running a PC on 4GB of RAM.

I’ve covered this topic about previously, but just to add, choosing an OS to make music on usually depends on the DAW software you want to use. Personally, I started my music production journey in 2006 with Logic Express. Since then, I have switched between multiple DAWs such as Cubase, Studio One, and even switch between using Mac & PC a few times only to finally finding myself buying a MacBook Pro Retina to use Logic X almost 10 years later in 2016. Choosing a good laptop for music production boils down to three main factors: • Main DAW software you’ll use • Processing power – You’ll want the fastest processor you can afford. • RAM – You need more RAM for VST intensive production. I recommend a minimum of 8GB.
Take away that shiny aluminum exterior (and bigger pricetag), and Macs and PCs are based on identical Intel-based x86 hardware. By setting up Boot Camp to run Windows side-by-side with OS X, you can play PC-exclusive games which haven’t been coded to run on OS X. As with most gaming laptops, the battery isn’t that great when the laptop starts putting lots of load on the processor. But if you’re going to be plugged in when making music, the Asus GL503 will perform like a charm.
